Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 was running smoothly until players started testing positive for coronavirus last week, after which, the tournament got postponed indefinitely. Now, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has cleared the air on the future of the remaining 31 games.

In a conversation with sports magazine Sportstar, Ganguly said that the remaining IPL matches can’t be played in India amid COVID surge. He added that it will be difficult to find a window for the leftover games due to COVID norms and quarantine process.

The cricket board president also confirmed that IPL could no way resume before the World Test Championship final against New Zealand, that will be played in England on June 18.

He told the sports magazine in a chat that, “It will be too early to say how we can find a slot to complete the IPL.” Adding that, “there are a lot of organisational hazards because of COVID such as 14-day quarantine process, due to which it can’t happen in India.”

The tournament was put to break after players from Kolkata Knight Riders, SunRisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals tested positive for coronavirus. Last year, IPL was hosted in the United Arab Emirates, due to low number of cases in the country.

Players were kept in bio-secure bubbles to keep them away from the virus, but as cases in India took off, and teams started getting affected, the tournament was called off.
