The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to Centre and social media platform Twitter on a plea seeking a mechanism “to check Twitter content and advertisements spreading hatred through fake news and instigative messages through bogus accounts,” reported ANI.

As per a report by PTI, the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by BJP leader Vinit Goenka, which said there are hundreds of fake Twitter handles and bogus Facebook accounts in the name of eminent people and high dignitaries.

The plea states that in the absence of a mechanism or a law to check online content, social media platforms, including Twitter, have been used by some people to “amplify” activities that are against the nation.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice SA Bobde directed that the matter be tagged with similar pending petitions seeking social media regulation.

The hearing comes amid the Twitter-government tiff on issues related to content removal and freedom of expression over the ongoing farmers’ protest.

The central government on Wednesday spoke to Twitter officials soon after the microblogging site said in a blog post that it partially complied with the government’s request to block access to certain Twitter accounts, reported PTI.

Twitter in its blog post said that it has taken action against more than 500 accounts and blocked access to several others within India, however, refused to block accounts of “news media entities, journalists, activists and politicians” citing the need to uphold freedom of expression.
