Internet users have come to the rescue of
a man looking for employment. Amid the economic distress caused by COVID-19 pandemic, many people are struggling to meet ends with social media being abuzz with posts detailing difficulties people are facing to find employment.
One such person was spotted holding a placard at Connaught Place in New Delhi by a Twitter user who posted a picture on the micro-blogging platform and sought the help of users in finding the man a job.
The Twitter user also listed the man’s experience in the
field of mineral industry.
The post soon went viral with several people offering their
help and tagging others to amplify the message.
And the man’s troubles seem to have been over if one were to
go by this entrepreneur’s tweet.
Recently, it was reported that visually-impaired cricketer Naresh
Tumda who is earning a living by doing labour work in Gujarat, just three years
after helping India win the Blind Cricket World Cup in 2018 against Pakistan. Moved
by Tumda’s plight, netizens sought the government’s intervention in the matter
and also urged the BCCI to provide support to him.
Tumba said he was earning a meager Rs 250 a day and had failed
to get a response from the government despite several pleas for providing him a
job.
A report on the impact of COVID-19 on employment tabled in
the Parliament by the Standing Committee on Labour on August 3 slammed the
government over the plight of urban poor.
It also called for offfering “another round of income support
to the poor to compensate for loss of jobs/employment incurred due to the two
lockdowns,” saying the move “would go a long way in mitigating their woes.”
“Moreover, there is an imperative need for putting in place
an Employment Guarantee Programme for the urban workforce in line with
MGNREGA,” the report said.
A survey conducted by non-governmental organisation ActionAid
Association’s in May 2020 revealed that 78% of the informal workforce had lost livelihood
due to the COVID-19 lockdown imposed by the government in March.
