With the Delta variant of the coronavirus spreading across the globe, a new debate has sprung over the prospect of a third vaccine shot. Even developed nations, where a large portion of the population has been vaccinated, are mulling over the idea of a third ‘booster’ shot.

Experts say it is too soon to know for sure if countries will need to organise a third vaccine round later in the year. Some suggest that priority should be given to hundreds of millions who have not even gotten their first jab yet.

Earlier this month, manufacturers Pfizer/BioNTech said they would ask US and European authorities for permission to provide a third dose of their vaccine.

The manufacturers said that this was aimed at boosting the immunity against COVID-19 in those who had already received 2 jabs.

As of now several variants of COVID-19 have been identified out of which four are the variants of concern. These are- Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and the rapidly spreading Delta variant.

The new and highly contagious Delta variant continues to be a cause of concern for health experts and countries like the US and New Zealand that were either untouched by COVID ravages or could manage to come out of it due to mass vaccination.

The Delta variant was responsible for deadly waves of COVID-19 in India, the UK, and European countries that are still reeling with the rampageous effect of coronavirus.

Delta variant, which was first detected in India, is to be a lung attacker and damages the organ causing the oxygen level to drop down drastically. This is why we had witnessed a shortage of oxygen cylinders across the world during these waves.

Now, amid the Delta variant chaos,

The United States on Friday announced that it will ship 25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to Africa. The first batch of jabs would be sent to Burkina Faso, Ethiopia and Djibouti.
