In an unfortunate incident, family members of a woman, who allegedly died due to COVID-19, attacked the doctors and healthcare staff after failing to get a bed at a private hospital in south Delhi, police said on Tuesday.

“The hospital received a woman in a critical condition at the emergency in the early hours of Tuesday. Immediate medical attention appropriate to her condition was given by a team,” Apollo hospital’s spokesperson said in a statement, adding that they couldn’t give her the bed because no beds were available.

The hospital staff, according to the spokesperson, told the family to immediately shift her to another facility with available beds.

“Unfortunately, the patient died around 8 am, following which her family members resorted to vandalism, destruction of hospital property and assault on our doctors and staff,” the statement said.

An unspecified number of hospital staff, including doctors, were injured in the clash outside Apollo Hospital, on Tuesday morning.

However, no complaint has been filed against anyone so far.

The purported video and pictures of the alleged attack, which have gone viral on social media, show blood, shattered doors and glasses inside the hospital and the two sides engaged in a battle, hitting each other with sticks, near the hospital’s entry gate.

The hospital, which condoled the death of the woman, said that the incident is shocking because the healthcare workers are tirelessly working to help patients amid the raging pandemic.

Like the rest of the country, the national capital too is battered by the devastating surge of Covid-19 cases. This surge has strained the city’s health infrastructure a bit too much. Hospital beds, medication and oxygen supplies are at a premium, with people forced to rely on social media with critically ill patients.

Delhi recorded over 20,000 infections and 380 COVID-19-linked deaths on Monday.
