Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi left Delhi on Saturday afternoon to meet the family of the alleged gangrape victim in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras, reported news agency ANI. A 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped by four men two week ago. She died at a Delhi hospital on Tuesday night. 

Priyanka Gandhi was seen driving a silver Toyota Innova with her brother Rahul Gandhi sitting next to her. They were headed to the DND toll plaza. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also posted a picture of him driving a car and said he was headed to Hathras, about 180 km from the national capital.

The incident has sparked nationwide protests.

On Saturday morning, Rahul Gandhi tweeted that he will again attempt to visit the gangrape victim’s family. 

“Congress MPs under the leadership of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi will go to Hathras, UP today afternoon to meet the family of the 19-year-old daughter of Uttar Pradesh, who was brutally assaulted and murdered,” Congress leader KC Venugopal had said.

“No power in the world can stop me from meeting and sharing the pain of the Hathras family,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi.

Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi attempted to visit Hathras on Thursday, but they were stopped at the Yamuna Express in Greater Noida. The top Congress leaders were also briefly detained following tussle with the cops. He was pushed to the ground during the scuffle with the incident being aired live on news channels.

“Why are you arresting me? What are the grounds for the arrest? What law am I violating,” the former Congress president was seen asking the police officials.

The Gautam Buddh Nagar police had filed an FIR against Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi and around 200 other party workers under The Epidemic Diseases Act for not maintaining social distancing and not wearing face masks.
