Slugging is the process of applying a generous amount of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on one’s face and leaving it overnight. This beauty technique has gone viral on social media and is being taken up by several influencers on Instagram.

According to followers of this practice, petroleum jelly is thought to create a protective barrier which prevents loss of water from the skin during night time. Compared to other skincare products, petroleum jelly is believed to lock in moisture more effectively. It can also repair the skin’s moisture barrier, preventing further loss of water. Petroleum jelly significantly also has no additives or fragrance, making it suitable for sensitive skin types.

It is important to note, however, that those with oily or acne-prone skin should avoid lathering petroleum jelly on their face as it is non-comedogenic i.e. it doesn’t clog pores. Since it is extremely viscous in consistency, it can trap dead skin cells and bacteria, which can potentially lead to breakouts.

Also, even though petroleum jelly create a protective barrier to lock in moisture, it cannot repair excessively dry skin by heavily moisturising. In cases like those, a dermatologist should be consulted, as they can prescribe a glycerine based ointment for reducing those dry patches.

While partaking in slugging as a night time ritual, some also choose to apply the product only to areas on the face that require attention, such as under the eyes.

So what are you waiting for? Vaseline is cheap, readily available and easy to apply, so make sure to stock your bathroom cabinet up with it!
