A Madurai couple is making headlines for getting married in the air on a chartered Spicejet plane to avoid COVID-19 restrictions.

They tied the knot exactly when the aircraft hovered over the Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple in the presence of 161 relatives, no less. As they say, it’s a match made in heaven!

The viral video shows the groom tying the Mangalsutra around the bride’s neck as their relatives shower them with flower petals.

Although the short clip has over 2.4k views, netizens have mixed reactions to it.

Most of the attendees of the mid-air wedding can be clearly seen mask-less, and worse, have no social distancing etiquette.

The outlandish wedding, which was performed in flagrant breach of the Covid protocols, comes as the State is plagued by virus cases.

Furthermore, the wedding celebration featured an enormous guest list, far beyond the state government’s specified 50 for such events, neglecting a critical problem in which hospitals are congested and healthcare staff is overburdened.

The flight took off at 7 AM and was air-bound for two hours, the New Indian Express has reported.

As it is a “peculiar violation,” Superintendent of Police Sujith Kumar told New Indian Express they are yet to decide if a lawsuit should be filed in the urban or rural boundaries.

Airport Director S Senthil Valavan said airport authority officials were unaware of the mid-air marriage ceremony, ANI has reported.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated investigations on mid-air marriage, according to ANI. It has sought a full report from the airline and airport authority.

DGCA has de-rostered the Spicejet crew. The airline has been directed to lodge a complaint against those not following COVID appropriate behavior with relevant authorities.

Acoording to ANI, Spicejet said, “The client was clearly briefed on Covid guidelines to be followed and denied permission for any activity to be performed on-board.”

Spicejet has claimed, as per ANI, that despite repeated requests & reminders, the passengers didn’t follow COVID guidelines & the airline is taking appropriate action as per rules.
