In what can only be called a blockbuster deal in
Major League Baseball, the New York Mets have gotten hold of shortstop  Javier Báez from the Chicago Cubs in a trade
deal just ahead of the trade deadline on Friday, US media reports said.

 The deal
will be completed after the player goes through a medical at his new team and
it is unclear who the Cubs got in return, MLB.com reported.

With Mets
star Francisco Lindor was injured and out for several weeks, Baez was an essential
buy to fill the hole in the defense of the team. Baez also provides an option
as an infield player at second or third base.

In 91 games this season, Baez is hitting
.248/.292/.484 (108 OPS+) with nine doubles, two triples, 22 homers, 65 RBI, 48
runs and 13 steals as an offensive player so he is a good option for the Mets
in offense too.

Baez is a two-time MLB All-Star (2018, 2019) and
a one-time World Series champion (2016) with the Chicago Cubs. Last season, he
also won the MLB Golden Glove Award.

In the 2021 season, the Mets are currently
sitting on the top of the National League East division table with 54 wins and
47 losses so far. The team has been phenomenal at home this season with 32 wins
and 18 losses while having an unimpressive record of 22 wins and 29 losses on
the road. In their next game, the Mets will take on the Cincinnati Reds on
Friday.
