Eminent Indian
designer Sabyasachi Mujkherjee has collaborated with global fast-fashion giants
H&M and it seems their new collection of Indian wear has been unequivocally
deemed a disappointment. That is judging by how people have reacted to the new
collaboration on Twitter.

Sabyasachi has
become somewhat of a celebrity in his own right, taking traditional Indian outfits
to new standards of luxury under his label by the same name. Girls even joke
about not getting married unless they wear a lehenga from Sabyasachi.

It’s
obvious to see his cult-favourite status among the Indian crowd, but even the
best can go amiss at times, at least that’s what people have said on social
media. However, the designer explained the reason behind the collaboration,
saying the ‘pret collection’ gives him the opportunity to connect with a wider
audience both in India and globally. It also aims to make his label a bit more
affordable for the general public.

“I’m often
asked why I can’t make my clothes more affordable, but an outreach like pret
requires huge investments and logistics costs which I couldn’t delve into. Now
I can proudly say I’ve made a special pret line which belongs to H&M and
the world, it comes at a great time celebrating 20 years of my label,” News 18 quoted
Sabyasachi as saying during an interview.

However, the
47-year-old has set the bar too high for even himself, with the Indian crowd seeming to think he
has dropped below those standards with the new collection. Here are some

“What was
important for us is embroidery and print. It was important to showcase these
handmade creations designed and digitized into a commercial scale by H&M to
create timeless, beautiful and affordable clothing. A lot of H&M’s
manufacturing is done in India, they brought their best teams in, and we put
our heads together to create a line I’m extremely proud of,” Sabyasachi said.
