World Liver Day is observed on April 19 every year to spread awareness about the diseases related to the organ.

As per the World Health Organization, liver diseases are the 10th most common cause of death in India. It can be caused by hepatitis A, B, C, alcohol and drugs.  If it is not treated on time it can lead to Liver Cancer and Liver Cirrhosis.

Viral Hepatitis occurs due to consumption of contaminated food, water and drug abuse.

The liver is the largest organ in our body and is a factory that processes all the food that we take in.

The liver is important because it fights infections and illness, regulates blood sugar, controls cholesterol level, removes the toxic substance from the body, helps blood to clot, releases bile and aids in digestion, breaks down medication and drugs, including alcohol, makes many of the body’s essential protein, breaks down insulin and other hormones in the body, responsible for manufacturing cholesterol and triglycerides.

 An unhealthy lifestyle and eating pattern, inherited or genetic,  viruses such as hepatitis A, B, C, increased consumption of alcoholic drinks, junk food, overweight, marked obesity and type 2 diabetes are common for liver diseases.

Liver diseases can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, add grains, fruits, vegetables, protein, fats and dairy products to your daily food routine, ensure safe blood transfusion to avoid viruses like hepatitis A, B, C and wash hands after using the bathroom.
