We have all, at least
once in our lifetime, watched ‘Pingu’, a beloved children’s television series,
hoping to come across or befriend an innocent penguin, who is self-sufficient
in every possible way. And for animal caretakers at Australia’s Perth Zoo,
this dream came true. Pierre, an endangered Northern Rockhopper penguin, is
undergoing rehabilitation at the zoo and has become iPad savvy. Neat, isn’t it?

His favourite thing to
watch on the iPad is ‘Pingu’ and the series is on his high rotation list, the zoo said
in a statement.

A video of him
watching the television series on the iPad was uploaded on the official
Facebook page of the zoo.

The zoo said he
is the only penguin of his type, who is being cared for by a zoo in Australasia.
To “ensure that he is able to still see and hear penguins of his type, we’ve started
playing him rockhopper penguin documentaries and showing him live streams of
the rockhopper penguins in international zoos, including those in Kansas City
Zoo in the USA and Edinburgh Zoo in the UK,” the Zoo said.

The zoo stated that since
he is experiencing feather moulting problems, he is not waterproof and so cannot
be released to the wild.

Rockhopper Penguins, one
of the rarest penguins in the world, have a global population of less than 240,300
breeding pairs.

The species are known
for their charismatic personalities and distinctive groucho marx eyebrows. On
land, Rockhoppers prefer to hop about the rocky shores of their colony’s
grounds, hence the name.
