Lisa Fletcher, 58, and her husband, Neil, 55 have decided to part ways with the modernizing world and embrace the old-school, yet amusing lifestyle of the 1930s. They only make calls on landlines, watch black-and-white television, listen to music on gramophones, and make payments in cash.

They also have a 1930s refrigerator and a nearly 100-year-old car. Their closets are brimming with vintage 1930s clothing. Shortly after the couple got together in 1991, Lisa decided to live their life in an authentic 1930s way and she convinced her husband for the same. The idea was initially not convincing to Neil but soon when Lisa changed a few things in their home, She realized that Neil began to notice interesting stuff in the same way that she did. They later agreed to go “full twenties and thirties.”

Lisa does not use modern machinery for house works as well, she loves to wash clothes by hand using mangle. They seldom ever use internet banking or credit cards. But Neil couldn’t get rid of his cellphone as he has to use it for work.

Since they moved in their house six years ago, they’ve been transforming their property into a 1930s bungalow with all the vintage details. The originality of the 1930s is preserved by them in their house with fireplace, furnishings, and even equipment, such as a functioning enamel cooker and a 1935 Westinghouse refrigerator. The skirting boards, light switches, doorknobs, and original cabinetry are all meticulously detailed in the same way as they originally were in 1930. The couple do not have any children, they occasionally visit a modern home showroom out of curiosity.

Lisa thinks that when they walk out on the road, people see them as “completely Barking mad” but she’s unapologetic for her choice and love for this vintage lifestyle.
