After sending all the England batters back to the pavilion for a modest total of 183 and negotiating the nervy closing hours of Day 1 without losing a wicket, India are in charge of the first Test against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham.

Put to field first, Indian pacers made good use of the conditions to dismiss the hosts under the 200 mark. Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers and ended with figures of four for 46. Mohammed Shami picked three wickets for 28. Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj also made it to the wickets column picking two and one wicket respectively.

At the stumps on Day 1, India are 21/0 and trail by 162 runs after K L Rahul, playing his first Test in two years, and Rohit Sharma survived 13 testing overs from English fast bowlers.

For a packed crowd at Trent Bridge, it was a treat to watch the Indian pacers display their supreme skills. Shami moved the ball both ways, Bumrah bowled his fast swinging yorkers, Thakur flaunted his natural outswinger and Siraj used the scrambled seam to perfection.

Although India bowled brilliant lines and with great control, their job was made easier by the English batsmen, who often looked too eager to play shots after coming fresh from white-ball games in The Hundred.

Skipper Joe Root (64 off 108 balls) was the only batsman who looked comfortable in the middle and Jonny Bairstow (29 off 71 deliveries), to a certain extent, as the duo shared a 72-run stand.

England, who were 138 for four at tea, lost their last six wickets for 45 runs and if it was not for Sam Curran’s unbeaten 27 towards the end, they would have struggled to cross 180.

Shami, who had removed Bairstow at the stroke of tea, struck four balls after the break by having Daniel Lawrence caught down the leg side, a soft dismissal.

Struggling to get off the mark, Jos Butter attempted a loose drive off Bumrah on his 18th ball only to edge it back to keeper Rishabh Pant.
