Japanese badminton players won three finals at the All England Open Badminton Championships 2022, held in Birmingham, England.

Reigning badminton world champion Akane Yamaguchi won the women’s single final.

“I came into the match focused on playing well and not worrying about the result. I managed to take the initiative and dictate play throughout,” Yamaguchi told Japan Times after her win over South Korea’s An Se-young.

Meanwhile Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida took the women’s doubles title, beating Chinese pair Zhang Shuxian and Zheng Yu 21-13, 21-9.

“We were able to win a major title, but I’m still aiming higher. I’m not satisfied with this and want to use this result to build momentum toward the Olympics,” Shida said after her win in the women’s doubles.

The third final was won by Olympic bronze medalists Yuta Watanabe and Arisa Higashino, who topped the mixed doubles event by defeating Chinese pair Wang Yilyu and Huang Dongping 21-19, 21-19.

“[Higashino] helped me get through some difficult moments. We’ve improved and become stronger than we were last year,” the 24-year-old Watanabe said, crediting the senior Higashino for the mixed doubles win.

Japan also achieved three-title hauls at the Denmark Open, French Open, and Indonesia Masters since the Tokyo Olympics of 2020.
