Umesh Yadav was named Man of the Match in the first IPL 2022 match between defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
CSK were restricted to 131/5 in 20 overs, thanks to economical bowling by KKR, especially Yadav, and KKR managed to win the encounter by six wickets.
Yadav’s first seven balls went for 11 runs, following which he became almost unplayable, and gave away a total of 20 runs in his 4 overs.
“Wickets in the powerplay is important. Team’s role is what I carried out today. Usually I’ve been focusing on my rhythm. I’m thankful to my trainers for keeping me in shape,” Yadav said, commenting on his performance in the opening game of the IPL 2022.
Yadav added that he was glad to pick wickets in powerplay overs, saying, “It’s a fresh wicket and the ball is gripping and there is bounce and swing as well, there is help for pace and spin as well. Last year I just played only 2 games and always feels nice to play and do well for the team. Got wickets in the powerplay, so I am very happy. If you look at my IPL record, I have the capability to take wickets in the powerplay and I also swing the new ball as well and as a fast bowler, I would love to lead the team and pick as many wickets in the powerplay.”
Since IPL 2018, Yadav has had the best strike rate (17.60) and second-best average (21.90) among bowlers who have played a minimum of 40 powerplay overs.
