Sen staged a stunning comeback after losing the first game 19-21 to Malaysia’s Tze Yong. The definitive 21-9, 21-16 results in the subsequent games sealed the gold for the 20-year-old Sen. Although nervous and unsure in taking certain decisions in the earlier part of the match, the young shuttler soon made it up in the second game, and did not lose momentum till the end of the match.

Social media is rife with congratulatory messages for the young champion. The President of India has also praised Sen’s performance, saying that the way he “bounced back with a commanding display symbolises a bold new India that is determined to win”.

The Almora, Uttarakhand native is a gold medallist of the 2018 Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games. In the same year, he also won the boys’ singles division at the Asian Junior Championships. In the BWF World Championships in 2021, Sen managed to win the bronze medal post his defeat to another Indian, Srikanth Kidambi. Notably, Kidambi has won the bronze medal in this year’s edition of the CWG.

With Sen’s victory, India’s medal tally at the 2022 CWG has now risen to 57. There are a number of events remaining on the last day of the multi-sport event, which could see India’s medal count rise further. The Indian men’s hockey team will be up against their Australian counterparts in the final, and will surely be trying to go for the big prize this time. The team had earlier won silver in the 2010 and 2014 editions of the CWG.

The closing ceremony for the Games is scheduled to commence from 12:00 AM.
