The Detroit Lions have taken a significant step in shoring up their quarterback lineup by signing veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater. The news, reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport, comes after weeks of talks between Bridgewater and the Lions. While the contract details are yet to be disclosed, the move signals the team’s determination to strengthen their backup quarterback position.

Bridgewater, a seasoned nine-year veteran, brings a wealth of experience to the Lions. He last served as the backup to Tua Tagovailoa for the Miami Dolphins. Notably, Bridgewater has a history with the Lions’ current regime, having been the backup quarterback for the New Orleans Saints during Dan Campbell’s time as the tight ends coach and assistant head coach.

During the 2019 season, Bridgewater impressed while taking over for an injured Drew Brees, leading the team to five victories in a row with impressive stats, including a 68 percent completion rate, nine touchdowns, two interceptions, and 7.1 yards per pass attempt.

Coach Dan Campbell expressed his admiration for Bridgewater and his desire to bring competition to the quarterback room. The signing of Bridgewater immediately changes the dynamics of the backup quarterback situation for the Lions. Previously, Nate Sudfeld appeared to have a firm hold on the position and had been performing decently.

However, with the addition of Bridgewater, Sudfeld now faces heightened competition for his role on the team. The move is also indicative of the Lions’ heightened goals for the season and their intention to have the best possible hands at the quarterback position.
