Eden Hazard’s contract was terminated by Real Madrid on Saturday. Fans are speculating that the Belgian star might retire. Some are hoping he will return to Chelsea.
Hazard is yet to make a statement. The 32-year-old’s contract was good till the end of next season. He moved to Real Madrid, from Chelsea, in 2018.
The Santiago Bernabeu camp said that Hazard leaving is a mutual decision. He has been a part of a team that won eight titles: 1 European Cup, 1 Club World Cup, 1 European Super Cup, 2 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, and 2 Spanish Super Cups.
“Real Madrid Football Club and Eden Hazard have reached an agreement whereby the player will leave the club as of 30 June 2023. Eden Hazard has been part of our club for four seasons,” Real Madrid said in a statement.
“Real Madrid would like to express our affection to Eden Hazard and we wish him and his family the best of luck for the next stage of his career,” the club added.
Hazard was a rockstar at Chelsea. However, he lost track in Spain. The Belgian midfielder’s tenure at Santiago Bernabeu was marred by injuries. He played 76 times in all competitions for the team – 14 more games than he managed in his first single season with the Blues.
At the Stamford Bridge, Hazard was a fan favorite. He scored 110 goals in 352 games. Fans want him to retire after a Chelsea stint.
“I can’t describe how excited I was when Eden Hazard finally joined Real Madrid in 2019. That excitement quickly turned into sadness after that ankle injury. We never saw the Chelsea Hazard and that still pains me. This decision is for the best for everyone,” a Twitter user said.
“Eden Hazard promised Chelsea fans that he will be back🔵. Personally, I wouldn’t want him back at Chelsea but he shouldn’t retire from football🤦🏽♂️,” another one added.
