James Anderson led the pack as England fast bowlers on Wednesday bowled India out for 78 in the third Test at Headingley. The 39-year-old displayed his class in a spell of 8-5-6-3 with the new ball. His three wickets included Rohit Sharma, the in-form KL Rahul and one of the best batsmen of the era Virat Kohli.

Speaking after the day’s play, Anderson said that he had cut down on the time he spent in nets to save it for the matches. “As I get older, I feel like I have to work that little bit harder in the gym. I feel like I bowl less in the nets, and try to save it for when it matters in the middle,” Anderson said.

He said that getting yourself mentally primed for bowling long spells was the biggest Test in international Test cricket. He said that he had always been able to switch himself on when bowling, and switch off when he was not in action.

India are currently leading 1-0 in the five-match series. Last week, India won the second Test at Lord’s by 151 runs as their pacers bowled out England for 120 on the final day. In that match, Anderson had grabbed a five-wicket haul in the first innings. He became the oldest cricketer to achieve the feat in the last 70 years.

Anderson also spoke about how he was overbowled during India’s second innings at Lord’s. India’s lower-order put together two long partnerships which frustrated the England bowling lineup.

“Walking off the pitch during the second Test at Lord’s, pretty much everything hurt, but that gives so much satisfaction knowing that I have put a shift in for the team.”
