Evander Holyfield’s red Everlast gloves from the iconic fight with Mike Tyson in the late 90s have been sold to a well-off collector for $38,704. The auction took place at Lelands Sports Memorabilia in America on September 19, 2022. 

The gloves were listed on Lelands’ website and were claimed to be “one of the most significant pair of boxing gloves in the sport’s modern history”. The site further called gloves “crisp, red Everlast gloves were worn by ‘The Real Deal’ in that landmark contest, with Everlast logo sewn on each cuff, and a screened logo in white”. The now-auctioned gloves also had ‘Holyfield #1’ carved with a black marker on the cuff logo.

In the legendary fight, that later became iconic in boxing history, Tyson bit his opponent Holyfield’s ear off, which led to his disqualification. The highly-anticipated match didn’t continue after this incident in the third round, after which Tyson lost his boxing license. This supposedly was the dark phase in Tyson’s boxing career. 

This unforgettable match of the late 90s between Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield took place in Las Vegas at MGM Grand. The former heavyweight champion, Holyfield, was wearing the same gloves that night and defending his belt against Tyson.

It is said that after the violent fight, Tyson apologised and made amends to Holyfield for his misconduct. The bitterness washed away as Holyfield recalled biting an opponent during his amateur days, and that he understood Tyson’s frustration as he was not able to get a grip of his gameHowever, they never faced each other for a match again after that. 

The ‘Bite Fight’ gloves were previously sold at an auction where Holyfield consigned his objects. Now, they have been sold once again after hitting the auction.
