As Argentina takes on Poland in the FIFA World Cup 2022 Group C match, they switched from the usual sky blue-white colours and went with deep purple instead. Fans were impressed with the jersey and Twitter was flooded with reactions. The purple kit is Argentina’s third away jersey and they wear it occasionally.

It was a must-win match for Argentina if they have to qualify for the Round of 16. Even a draw would not saved them from being eliminated, especially if Saudi Arabia win against Mexico.

Here are some reactions.

The match ended in a 2-0 victory for Argentina thanks to goals by Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez. Although Poland could not score in the match, they still managed to make it through to the next round thanks to a late goal by Saudi Arabia against Mexico.

The Saudis lost the match but made sure that Mexico did not win by a goal difference of more than one.

However, it seemed then as if Poland will be through due to Mexico’s poor fair play record. FIFA’s fair play rule says that in case two teams are tied on both points and goal difference, then the team with the least number of yellow cards will go through.

As it turned out, Mexico had eight yellow cards, which was more than Poland, and thus even if they had won by 2-0, Poland would have gone through to the Round of 16.

Argentina fans will now be relieved that Messi and co have not been eliminated from the tournament, a possibility that seemed likely when they set out to play earlier today.
