Goncalo Ramos has proven to be a lethal weapon in the Portuguese armoury in their round of 16 match against Switzerland. The 2016 Euro Champions brushed aside the Swiss challenge on their way to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 scoreline, with Ramos bagging a hattrick for himself.

This match was the first start of Ramos for his national side. He debuted for the Portuguese senior team in September 2022. Football analyst Statman Dave has reported that Ramos had 25 touches in the match and has had a total of five shots on target.

Besides scoring thrice in the match, Ramos has also assisted one goal, won three aerial duels, and provided two key passes in the match.

Ramos’ goal was the first hattrick of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He has become the first player since Miroslav Klose in 2002 to score a hattrick in his first World Cup match as a starter.

After the 21-year-old’s performance for Portugal, many fans have started wondering on social media whether there is room left for Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal squad. CR7 has managed to score a single goal in the ongoing tournament, which came via a penalty against Ghana in their first group-stage match.

Portugal now have a solid bunch of youngsters who are ready to shoulder bigger responsibilities now that the old guards Ronaldo and Pepe are in the twilight stages of their respective careers.

While Ramos has scored three goals and assisted once in the ongoing tournament, João Félix has scored twice and assisted twice. Rafael Leão, who is also 23, has scored twice in the tournament.

Ramos was in talks for a potential move to PSG this summer, but now his asking price will be considerably higher owing to his impressive performance in the match.
