In a letter to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, the state Congress chief Kuldeep Singh Rathore has alleged that during the inauguration of Atal Tunnel, this month, the foundation stone laid by party chief Sonia Gandhi in 2010, was missing, ANI reported.

Gandhi was the chairperson of the then-ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA). She laid the foundation of the Rohtang Tunnel, in June, 2010.

It was renamed as Atal Tunnel by the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on October 3.

Congress threatens agitation

In his letter, the state Congress chief has asked the CM to reinstall the foundation stone within 15 days “failing which Congress will hold agitation,” Rathore said, ANI reported.

About Atal Tunnel

The 9.02 km long tunnel connects Manali to Lahaul-Spiti valley throughout the year.

It is strategically important as it reduces the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by four to five hours.
