England captain Joe Root, on Friday, notched up his 20th Test ton in a Test match against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. Having played more than 150 balls, Root struck 11 boundaries as Indian bowlers toiled to stem the flow of runs.

Root was ably supported by Dominic Shibley, who also notched up a patient half-century, helping England recover from the double jolt.

Root reached the landmark in 164 balls with a single on the leg side, his fourth in Asia. This is his third hundred of the year, having scored centuries against Sri Lanka and India.

In doing so, Root became the first cricketer to hit a century in his 98th, 99th and 100th Test.

The in-form batsman — who made his Test debut in India in 2012 and is playing after match-winning knocks of 228 and 186 in Sri Lanka — swept the the Indian spinners around the stadium as he reached the landmark in style.

He joined England greats Colin Cowdrey and Alec Stewart in getting a hundred in their 100th Test.

The 30-year-old Root, who has scored over 8,000 runs at an average of over 49, is the 15th England player in 144 years of Test cricket to have appeared in a hundred matches.
