India face Sri Lanka in the first match of the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series at the R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. The match could be said as an evenly-matched contest as both the team have fielded a fairly wet behind the ears team. While the Indian side saw two debutants – Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav – the Sri Lankan team saw the only debutant – Bhanuka Rajapaksa.

As both the teams battle it out for the ODI series, here are a few of the stats for the first ODI match between India and Sri Lanka.

Ishan Kishan became the second Indian player to make his ODI debut on his birthday. The first was Gursharan Singh, whose only ODI (vs Aus, Hamilton, 1990) came on his 27th birthday.

Shikhar Dhawan became India’s 25th ODI captain, while Ishan Kishan became India’s 25th ODI wicket-keeper!

-Dhawan will be captaining India with 10 players in the 20-player squad being uncapped.

-2021 will be the 37th consecutive year, marking India and Sri Lanka facing each other in at least a game in international cricket. The last time the two sides did not play against each other in a calendar year was in 1983.

-Having played 159 ODIs against each other, Sri Lanka and India have played the most amount of ODI between any two sides.

-A win by a margin of 3-0, 2-0 or 2-1 will give India 93 wins in ODIs against Sri Lanka. This will mark the most amount of wins for a team against an opponent.

-Talking about India’s young squad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar said: “These are very talented young guys. We’ve seen them in their respective IPL teams. They have done really well there to grab their spots in the Indian team. I don’t think they need much guidance. You just go and talk to them if there’s a need for something to talk about. We never try to make anything complicated. We’ve got Rahul Dravid with us, he is guiding them really well.”
