The first week of the Indian Premier League has come to an end and as expected all the eight franchises and the 240 odd players have made every minute of the grandest T20 competition worth a watch. From KL Rahul’s elegance to Mohammed Shami’s rippers, Faf Du Plessis catching for fun to Virat Kohli making catching look fun, IPL has been like enjoying Diwali with your family but on a video call.

Points table

With seven matches down, the teams and players have started growing familiar to the post COVID-19 conditions, a wet ball and big grounds. Some teams have performed exceptionally well without the crowds while some have choked just in the end.

At the end of the week Delhi Capitals occupy the first rung of the IPL table with two wins in two matches. Five teams are locked on two points each after the Capitals, with young captain KL Rahul’s Kings XI Punjab in second place due to their superior net run rate.

Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders languish at the bottom of the table, having lost their opening matches respectively.

Here is the points table reflecting each team’s initial performance.

Orange Cap

To summate the first week in a few questions, seven out of ten cricket geeks would ask,“Why is MS Dhoni not batting up the order?” The other three would be tempted to go with,“How did Kings XI Punjab manage to lose their first match?” This edition of the IPL has been all about batting first, setting the target and suffocating the opposition in the second innings.

Faf Du Plessis is wearing the orange cap with 173 runs against his name, KL Rahul and his brilliant century follow the South African’s consistency with 153 runs. Even after a low day against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mayank Agrawal stands third with 115 runs.

Purple Cap

IPL had always been a tournament dominated by the batsmen, but bowlers like Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Shami and Yuzvendra Chahal have defied the odds and outperformed the best batsmen.

Kagiso Rabada with five wickets tops the wicket takers list followed by Sam Curran (5) and Mohammed Shami’s 4.36 economy rate for four wickets. Yuzvendra Chahal and Sheldon Cottrell follow Shami with miser like rates. Ravi Bishnoi needs a special mention in this list for the young leg-spinner has been a threat throughout.

The action continues with the Kolkata Knight Riders taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
