Delhi Capitals opener Shikhar Dhawan went on to score 85 runs in 54 balls with the help of 10 fours and two maximums to down MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in a one-sided show. Chasing a 189 run target on a batting-friendly Wankhede pitch, the Capitals crossed the line with eight balls to spare. It was the 138-run opening stand shared between Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw that set the foundations of the team’s first win. Shaw scored 72 runs in 38 balls.

Earlier, CSK, bolstered by Suresh Raina’s half-century and a quickfire 34-run cameo by Sam Curran scored 188 runs, losing seven wickets. MS Dhoni recorded his fourth IPL duck when Delhi pacer Avesh Khan knocked his stumps. Moeen Ali’s 36 run-knock and Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 26 runs were other reasonable scores for Chennai.

On being declared the man of the match, Shikhar Dhawan said, “I really enjoyed my batting. Was enjoying the way I was hitting the ball. Prithvi was batting really well. He carried on with his form from Vijay Hazare. It was important to get off to a good start because we were chasing a big total. I have to innovate a few shots and I enjoy taking up challenges. I was playing the ball close to the body. The wicket was a little sticky. I knew my game plan.”
