The David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderbad suffered a brain fade moment during their run chase in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Chepauk on Thursday. The 17th over of the match saw them gift the tie to the Royal Challengers Bangalore as Shahbaz Ahmed ran through the middle-order.

With the match done and dusted, former Indian cricketers came down heavily on Manish Pandey, whose dismissal caused a mini-collapse.

Talking to Cricbuzz, former India pacer Ashish Nehra said that the SRH batter, who got out, did not get dismissed like proper batsmen but like tailenders.

“Virat Kohli deployed his only left-arm spinner at the right time. But the way SRH batters – Jonny Bairstow, Manish Pandey and Abdul Samad got out, it didn’t seem like proper batters are getting out. They appeared to be losing wickets like tailenders, especially Pandey,” Nehra said.

“When the players at positions 9, 10, 11 don’t have many options against moving deliveries, they target only mid-wicket and long on. And that’s the major difference. When you are in a good form and know how to play under pressure, you have options to hit those away going deliveries towards mid-off or cover,” he added.

“And that’s why Manish Pandey failed to cement his place in the Indian team. You look when he made his debut, and then the likes of Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav came and went far ahead. Because these players are much better at adapting to the pressure and that’s why they leapfrogged Pandey,” he added.

Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel said Pandey’s shot selection was poor.

“Some real poor shot selection there. It was shocking to play shots like that,” Parthiv said on Star Sports.

Talking about his team’s performance, captain David Warner said the loss hurt the team and it’s a difficult pill to swallow.

Manish Pandey, who looked settled in the middle, got out while playing a rash shot. He scored 38 runs off 39 balls at a strike rate of 97.44.
