Justin Verlander, the New York Mets pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB), said on Tuesday that if he finds himself pitching well and healthy at 45, he will keep on playing for the Mets. 

The 39 -year-old baseball pitcher was speaking to SNY Mets – the official media of the New York Mets, about his retirement plans.

When asked if he could play at the age of 40 like NFL quarterback Tom Brady, Verlander came up with a response that became a big headline immediately. 

“If I find myself at 45 pitching well and being healthy, then why would I stop?” Verlander said to the journalist.

Verlander is a baseball player of legendary status. Before the Mets, he has previously played in MLB for Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers.

He started dating model Kate Upton in 2014 and the couple tied the knot in early 2014. They got engaged in 2016 and a year later on November 4, 2017, they got married in a medieval church in Tuscany, Italy – just two days after Verlander won the World Series with the Astros.

Upton and Verlander announced on July 14, 2018, that Upton is pregnant with their first daughter. Genevieve was born later in 2018.

Justin Verlander is a veteran player in the MLB and apart from his salary from the Jets, he also earns from sponsorship and out-of-the-pitch deals. His net worth is estimated at $150 million. 

When asked further about why he wants to keep playing in the MLB, Verlander said that not playing would be selling himself short in the end. “Why would I put in all that time and work and sacrifice, and sell myself short at the end?” he said.
