The Las Vegas Raiders have released defensive end Chandler Jones has been released, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The development comes after Jones’ arrest in Las Vegas on Friday, ending a rough week highlighted by several social media outbursts. An alleged violation of a temporary protective order for domestic abuse led to the arrest.

Jones had not been with the Raiders since the Labor Day weekend, at which time he posted a number of things on social media critical of Mark Davis, Dave Ziegler, and Josh McDaniels. On September 20, the Raiders added Jones to the non-football injury/illness list.

Jones was halfway through a $31 million, three-year deal that he signed last year. Jones’ dismissal will cost the Raiders $12 million in dead money against the salary cap in 2023 and 2024 because the team modified his contract in March to free up more cap space.

Bill Belichick has constantly demonstrated a willingness to reunite with former players under his tutelage. He frequently lets his star performers land lucrative jobs elsewhere before finally bringing them back at a lower pay. This exemplifies Belichick’s distinctive strategy of maximizing value when selling high and purchasing assets at a discount. Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, and other players are notable examples of this tactic in use.
