Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, 23, has scripted history by winning first medal in athletics after a gap of 100 years for India, and a second gold after 13 years. The 23-year-old, who is being celebrated by the south asian country, is not just the “hero” for Indians but for his on-field rival too, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem. The 24-year-old Pakistani athlete, in the “hero” section in his profile on the official site of the Olympics, has written the name of Neeraj Chopra.
The two players, who competed last in Asian Games in 2018, seem to share a good relationship. Arshad Nadeem had won bronze at the 2018 Asian Games, where Neeraj Chopra had won the gold.
Soon after Neeraj Chopra’s gold win, a tweet screenshot, from an account that claims to be an official Twitter handle of Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, is doing rounds on social media. The tweet says “Congratulations to my Idol #NeerajChopra for winning gold medal….Sorry Pakistan I could not win medal for you.” The tweet is no longer available on the same account.
However, according to the official website of Olympics, Arshad Nadeem does not have a Twitter account. Links to his Instagram and Facebook accounts are mentioned on the website. While the Instagram link redirects to his page, the Facebook link redirects to an error page.
Twitter, however, is unforgivable and roasting the 24-year-old Pakistani athlete.
Some of the users from India defended the Pakistani athlete, a few also said that the account-in-question was “fake”.
Nadeem was one of 12 medal hopefuls at today’s javelin finals. Arshad Nadeem gave a medal hope to Pakistan, which hasn’t won a single medal at the Olympics since 1992.
The athlete from Mian Channu in Pakistan’s Punjab province finished fourth in the opening round with a throw of 84.62 metres in his third attempt. Nadeem’s first throw landed at a distance of 82.40 – well below his personal best of 86.38m. His second attempt was deemed a foul. He finished 5th in the competition.
