Pat Cummins, David Warner pull out of limited-overs series against Pakistan
- Cummins and Warner will leave Pakistan after the end of the three-match Test series
- Australia will play three Tests, three ODIs and one-off T20I in Pakistan
- This will be Australia’s first tour of Pakistan since 1998
Australia Test captain Pat Cummins and opening batter David Warner have pulled out of the limited-overs series against Pakistan, starting March 29 after the conclusion of the three-match Test series. Australia will tour Pakistan in March-April for the first time since 1998. The limited-overs series will be comprised of three ODIs and one-off T20I.
Cummins and Warner, however, made themselves available for the Test series which will be played in Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore, respectively. The first Test will be played in Rawalpindi from March 4. Micthell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon have also been included in Australia’s squad for the Test series. But like Cummins and Warner, the trio will also miss the limited-overs fixtures.
The three ODIs and one-off will be played in Rawalpindi from March 29 to April 5.
T20 World Cup-winning captain Aaron Finch will lead a 16-man limited-overs squad that includes Test players Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith.
“We have picked a talented and versatile squad with a number of challenges to juggle,” national selector George Bailey said in a statement.
“(That includes) the tour structure of predominantly 50 over games, management of several multi-format players in the medium to long term, and our need to build experience and depth in preparation for two short-form World Cups within the next 18 months.
“We’re confident the squad can both compete successfully on this tour and continue our progress towards those crucial tournaments.”
The last time when Australia toured Pakistan in 1998, they won the Test series 1-0 and ODI series 3-0.
During the 2018-19 series, when both sides faced each other in the UAE, Pakistan won the Test series 1-0.
