To make up for the festive season that we will be spending at home this year, the chefs of the British royal family have released their exclusive recipe on their official website. This will allow people to take cue from their menu and cook the traditional Christmas gingerbread right at our homes.

Also, since majority of the population will spend Christmas at home this year, one can jazz it up by treating themselves and their loved ones to some traditional royal food.

The Gingerbread can be made in three easy steps- kneading, baking, and icing.

Step 1: Making the gingerbread dough

  1. To make the gingerbread dough, mix the bicarbonate of soda(14g), flour(1000g), ground cinnamon(14g), and ground ginger(28g) in a bowl
  2. Add cold diced butter(355g) and mix till the crumb stage is reached.
  3. Add light brown sugar(500g)
  4. Add golden syrup(175g) and egg(140g) – and mix until the dough is formed.
  5. Separate the two blocks and knead them with your hand to flatten them.
  6. Wrap and chill for a few hours
  7. Then, roll the dough to 5 mm thickness for the house parts and 3 mm thickness for the decorative parts.
  8. Use the gingerbread templates as a guide to cut out the desired shapes.
  9. Chill it again before baking
  10. Crush boiled sweets into the spaces you’ve cut for windows.

Step 2: Baking

Once the dough is made and shaped, the hard part is done. All you have to do is place the shaped pieces on the baking tray. After they are chilled, bake the house pieces for 18 minutes and the smaller pieces for 12 minutes approximately. The temperature should be at 165C.

Step 3: Icing

The most delicious part is the icing of the bread. To prepare the icing:

  1. Separate the icing sugar from its lumps and mix it with lemon juice and egg. Use your hand to do this process. Once done, use the machine to blend further.
  2. Paddle the mixture slowly for 2 minutes. Once done, scrape the sides and then paddle properly.
  3. Paddle until a creamy hard consistency is reached.
  4. Loosen the icing with some water for decoration
  5. To assemble the gingerbread, use hard peak icing.

So, this festive season, although you cannot go out to eat your favourite delicacies, you can make your royal food and celebrate your festival in the royal style.
