Saudi Arabia played a better first 45 minutes and created many chances to score. However, a goal by Poland’s Piotr Zielinski put them behind in the 39th minute.

In the second half, Poland beat Saudi Arabia’s strong press and held on to the lead. In the final 10 minutes of the match, captain and Poland’s star player Robert Lewandowski scored his first ever FIFA World Cup giving the Polish team a comfortable 2-0 lead to see the rest of the match through.

“Today everything I had inside, the dreams, the importance of the occasion, all those dreams from my childhood came through,” Lewandowski said after the match. “It was so significant.”

“I always wanted to score at the World Cup and this dream came true,” he continued, adding, “It’s not easy, because we didn’t have many opportunities in the first match and I missed that penalty.”

“The older I get, the more emotional I get,” the 34-year-old said. “I’m aware that when it comes to the World Cup, that this might be my last World Cup. And I wanted to underline that I played at World Cups and I scored.”

After Argentina won against Mexico later in the day, Poland are now top of Group C with four points from two matches.
