Indian shuttler PV Sindhu on Sunday was defeated by Spanish veteran Carolina Marin in the finals of the Swiss Open. The Indian lost the match by a score of 12-21, 5-21 in the final of Women’s singles division.

The 25-year-old, who had won the World Championship gold medal in the tournament back in 2019, was absolutely decimated by Marin as the Spaniard took her apart, finishing off the match in 35 minutes.

This also accounted for the Indian star’s third successive loss to Marin. The latter, on the other hand, won both the Super 1000 events in Thailand back in January, and acquired the second position in the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals.

The world number seven ranked Indian, who did not lose a single game in her four previous matches, failed to overcome the challenge posed by Marin, who, with this win, recorded her third title victory of the year.

An initial lead of 2-0 was acquired by Marin in the opening set, with Sindhu bridging the gap in a short while. A close fight ensued, with the Indian managing only once to get a briefly lead of 6-4 in the match before her opponent levelled herself yet again.

With Marin reaching the half time with an advantageous score of 11-8, the match did not see much change as of fortunes, so to say, as she continued to acquire point after point, sealing off the first game with ease.

The second game saw a repetition of the first, with Marin reaching a high of 18-2, which became unassailable for Sindhu, leading to her defeat.

The shuttler from Hyderabad will be competing next in the All England Championships, scheduled to be held from March 17 to March 21.
