Four years as full-time Indian skipper and Virat Kohli is still looking for an elusive first ICC title. The 32-year-old announced that he will step down as 20-over captain after the 2021 World Cup, which means the tournament is likely to be his last chance of glory as a leader in the format.

The T20 World Cup kicks off in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, which starts on Sunday. Team India will start their campaign against arch rivals Pakistan on October 24.

Kohli, who also announced that he will be stepping down as the skipper of Indian Premier League side Royal Challengers Bangalore from the 2022 season, cited excessive workload as the reason behind his decision. Going into the World Cup, the Delhi stalwart is expected to be challenged as skipper and batsman.

The Indian run machine last scored a century in 2019. While, he has surpassed the 50-run mark on several occasions, the 72nd international hundred has simply escaped him. The T20 World Cup will come up as an opportunity for Kohli to score a hundred, which will be his first in T20Is.

“I think he will enjoy his cricket more now after taking this decision,” Irfan Pathan told AFP.

“India will do well with the side, the confidence and the experience they have.”

Kohli gets into the tournament with a side full of champions. The likes of his deputy Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to play pivotal roles in India’s campaign. While several champions will be on the field, Kohli will have his predecessor MS Dhoni to guide him as mentor. MSD is one of the most successful leaders in the history of the game. The 40-year-old has won every trophy possible.

With plenty on the line, favourites India are going to feel the pressure. Kohli will have to lead the side over the finish line.
