Afghanistan pacers Hamid Hassan and Naveen-ul-Haq shared six wickets between them as Afghanistan swept aside Namibia by 62 runs in their Super 12 group 2 match of the ICC men’s T20 World Cup in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Electing to bat, Afghanistan posted 160/5, courtesy of Hazratullah Zazai (33), Mohammad Shahzad (45), Asghar Afghan (31) and Mohammad Nabi (32 not out).

With the ball, the Afghans restricted Namibia to 98/9 for their second win in the tournament.

In their run-chase, Namibia lost three wickets inside the powerplay and failed to gain any momentum whatsoever from there. Naveen-ul-Haq (3/26) removed Craig Williams (1) and Michael van Lingen (11) early in a spell of 2/2 and then added another wicket later on.

Hamid Hassan (3/9 from 4 overs) ran through the Namibia middle-order, getting the wickets of captain Gerhard Erasmus (12), top-scorer David Wiese (26) and JJ Smit (0).

Namibia were 29/3 in 5.2 overs with Gulbadin Naib (2/19) chipping in with the wicket of Jan Loftie-Eaton (11).

Star spinner Rashid Khan (1/14 from 4 overs), who was introduced in the eighth over, got Zane Green out for 1 in his first delivery of the day as Namibia found themselves tottering.

Green missed the ball completely and he was cleaned up.

Asghar Afghan, who played his last international match, said: “It was an important win for us, he bowled really well (on Naveen-ul-Haq), used his variations extremely well on this wicket. Thanks to the fans for all the support given to the team so far and hope that it’ll continue throughout the tournament.”

“The boys have had good morale in the team. We do discuss during team meetings that we might chase at times as well. I tell the openers to go and play their game. Just go and enjoy your cricket. We are always depending on spinners but we have some quality seamers as well. Hamid bowled brilliantly today,” Afghanistan captain Mohammad Nabi said about the win.
