Afghanistan skipper Mohammad Nabi is not one for speaking to the press. In a video that has gone viral on social media, the 36-year-old confesses that attending to his media duties is “the hardest thing” and that he will soon run out of his English-speaking abilities. 

“Sabse mushkil kaam hai bhai yeh, kasam se (this is the hardest thing to do, I swear brother),” Nabi says. “Kitne questions hai? 5 minute mein meri English khatam ho jayegi bhai. (How many questions are there? In five minutes, my English will be over).”

Nabi, who is a fluent speaker of Urdu, grew up in Pakistan‘s Peshawar, where his family moved after fleeing from Afghanistan during the Russian military occupation in the 80s. 

Afghanistan come into the tournament on the back of the recent Taliban takeover of the country. And Nabi is hoping the team can bring a smiles to people’s faces wlanguaith their performances at the ongoing T20 World Cup

“It’s not that ideal,” Nabi told reporters on Sunday, a day ahead of their opening Super 12 match against Scotland here.

“Everyone knows that back home in Afghanistan, there’s a lot happening from the last few months. But, from a cricket point of view, everybody is ready and prepared well for this World Cup.” Nabi, who forms a fine spin triumvirate alongside Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, added, “There were little issues when we arrived in Dubai, but these last two warm-up games and practice sessions prepared the team well.

“The fans are really waiting because the only happiness in Afghanistan is cricket. If we do well in the tournament and win games, the fans will be really happy and there will be a lot of smiles on faces.” Nabi insisted that he will try his best to get his team to play as a unit.
