The US Open 2022 is at its business end and the Flushing Meadows will witness one of the most high-voltage matches of the year when world no. 1 Iga Swiatek and no. 5 Ons Jabeur face each other in the women’s singles final on September 10.

This is the first time Swiatek has qualified for the US Open final, but she is currently in her breakthrough year, already winning six titles, including a Grand Slam at the French Open. On the other hand, Ons Jabeur scripted history when she qualified for the US Open final and became the first African woman to achieve the feat. To add to that, she did it in a straight-set victory in the semifinal.

It is safe to say that Swiatek and Jabeur are the best women’s tennis players in the world currently and to see them fight for the title in a Grand Slam, something like this hasn’t happened in the last couple of years.

Apart from the six titles in 2022, Swiatek has also reached the semifinal of three Grand Slams this year. The Polish star currently has 9,600 points accumulated over the year and if she manages to win the US Open on Saturday, will cross 10,000 points, a feat that has been achieved by only Serena Williams in the last nine years.

On the other hand, Moroccan ace Jabeur has proved herself one of the best players in the world since last Spring. She won a WTA 1000 event in Madrid and has since emerged victorious in Berlin and has qualified for the finals at Wimbledon, Rome and Charleston. On Saturday, she will be competing in her second consecutive Grand Slam final and a win will ensure she has won at least one title on all surfaces in 2022.

What’s more astonishing is that the last time two women’s players qualified for two different Grand Slam finals was in 2006, when the Williams sisters did it.

Swiatek is regarded as one of the best athletic stars in the world, whereas Jabeur has mastered complete control over her abilities and can use several different shots. Jabeur’s serve and forehand are second to none among the women’s players, but Swiatek’s defence is something she will be wary of.

The duo has faced each other four times in their career and each of them has won two matches. Jabeur emerged victorious in their last meeting on a hard court, which took place in the Cincinnati Masters last year and Swiatek will be eager to change her fate on Saturday. Swiatek has not dropped a set in her nine finals, all of which she has won. The last time she was handed a defeat in a final, came in 2019.

However, with Jabeur making her back-to-back Grand Slam final appearance, if someone can stop Swiatek in her tracks, it will most likely be her.
