Enzo Fernandez scored an own goal against Australia in Argentina‘s round of 16 match on Saturday at the Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium at Ar Rayyan, Qatar.

Craig Goodwin’s long shot touched Enzo Fernandez before making it past Argentine goalie Emiliano Martinez and into the nets.

The goal brought Australia back to the game with several enthusiastic supporters of the country sensing a potential change of momentum. Socceroos, the official twitter handle of Australia’s men’s national football team also tweeted in high spirits.

The goal was also the event’s second own goal after Nayaf Aguerd‘s 100th goal of the tournament was the first such goal. The goal helped trip Argentina’s two-goal lead to one with 14 minutes of real-time remaining.

While Argentina, thanks to efforts by  Lionel Messi and Julian Alvarez, kept attempting several shots at the goals, albeit without success. Australia was resourceful and made several attempts, even extending into the extra time.

The game’s most thrilling moment was in the final minute of play when a brilliant last-moment save by Emiliano Martinez secured Argentina a quarter-final face-off against the Dutch.

Earlier in the day, Argentina raced off to a lead after Lionel Messi’s brilliant strike in the 36th minute of play. In his 1,000th career match, the Albicelestes skipper was in imperious form, also setting up beautiful passes that could well have been goals.

After half-time, 22-year-old sensation Julian Alvarez chipped in with another goal in the 58th minute. It took Argentina to a comfortable 2-0 lead that proved too strong to be eclipsed in the end.
