Edwin van der Sar, a former goalkeeper for Manchester United who experienced a cerebral hemorrhage, has been taken to a hospital in Croatia, with the help of his old team Ajax.

As they were writing, AFC Ajax announced the news on Twitter, “On Friday, Edwin van der Sar has had a bleeding around his brain. He’s currently in hospital in the intensive care unit and is in a stable condition. Once there is more concrete information, an update will follow. Everyone at Ajax wishes Edwin a speedy recovery. We’re thinking of you.”

Van der Sar was on vacation on a Croatian island when he fell sick. He was flown to a hospital on Friday afternoon, and his condition is stated to be stable.

Van der Sar played for Ajax between 1990 and 1999. Prior to heading to England in 2001 to join Fulham, he also spent some time at Juventus.

His tenure at United, where he won four Premier League championships, three League Cups, and the Champions League in 2008, is what people remember him for the most. He played 266 times for the Red Devils and 130 times for the Netherlands, earning him 130 caps.

Van der Sar joined the Ajax board as marketing director in 2012 before becoming CEO of the club where he began his playing career in 2016. While he managed it, the team won five Eredivisie championships and had the historic Champions League run to the semi-final in 2019.

He gave an explanation of his decision to resign in May after Ajax missed out on Champions League qualification. Van der Sar said: “After almost eleven years on the board, I am done. We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.”

“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together. I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things. It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign,” he added.
