Mason Greenwood was cleared today of all charges of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.

The Manchester United striker was due to stand trial in November after being apprehended over the accusations in January 2022, following a series of images and videos that were posted online.

“The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly,” said Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s Head of Public Protection.

“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail. I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them. An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims. If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don’t let this case put you off asking for help.”

Given the extensive media attention of this case, according to Greater Manchester Police, it is “only right” that they make this announcement about Greenwood, who was detained in January of last year.

The Manchester United striker initially faced three counts against the same complainant: one allegation of attempted rape, one offence of coercive behaviour, and one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

Greenwood, a graduate of the club’s academy and previously regarded as one of the most promising talents in English football signed a new deal with United in February 2021 that runs through at least 2025. In September 2020, Greenwood earned his England debut against Iceland. However, after breaking the team’s coronavirus rules, he and Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden were expelled.

“Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.” the Premier League team announced at the time.

Additionally, United made the decision to take any Greenwood-related items out of their club shop and online shops.

Now that he has been exonerated of all charges, the Bradford native might be given the go-ahead to restart his professional playing career.

Following a statement from GMP, United has yet to comment on Greenwood, who was under contract with the team until 2025 at the time of his suspension, or his future there.
