Baker Mayfield has been named the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers for the 2022 season.

Matt Rhule, the head coach, revealed his decision on Monday.

“When we started this process, we were looking at three things,” Rhule stated this on the team’s website. “No. 1, mastery of the offense, No. 2, situational football excellence, and No. 3, moving the ball and getting guys involved. That’s been our focus all along.

“Baker has made a lot of improvement, a lot of growth in all three areas in a short amount of time,” he added.

Who is Baker Mayfield?

Baker Mayfield is a football quarterback who used to play for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League in the United States of America. 

Mayfield began his college football career as a walk-on player at Texas Tech before transferring to the University of Oklahoma where he became first eligible to play in 2015.

After winning the starting quarterback job in 2015, Mayfield won several awards for his performance as a senior in 2017, including the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, Walter Camp Award, and unanimous All-America recognition. 

The now 26-year-old was drafted by the Browns in the first round (first overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Mayfield was named 2018 PFWA Rookie of the Year and was one of five 2018 NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Year finalists, along with Nick Chubb.

He is a six-time NFL Pepsi Rookie of the Week (Weeks 3, 7, 9, 12, 14 and 17) and a NFL Rookie of the Month for November 2018.

Mayfield also won the AFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week 16 in 2018.

He became Oklahoma’s sixth Heisman Trophy winner in program history in 2017 and the first former walk-on player to win the award.
