Colt McCoy’s release by the Arizona Cardinals on Monday stunned the football community.

Following reports that Kyler Murray will continue to be on the PUP list, the Cardinals were left without their franchise quarterback for at least the first four games of the season when the decision was made.

When the squad faced the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field in the season opener, McCoy and rookie fifth-round pick Clayton Tune were seen as the favourites. During both training camp and preseason games, McCoy played most of the snaps with the starting lineup.

Despite having only 12 throw attempts in the preseason, McCoy reportedly struggled during the team’s joint practises with the Minnesota Vikings.

Tune will now compete with recently acquired Josh Dobbs for the starting position. Although Cardinals head coach Gannon claimed they wouldn’t identify a starter because they had a “competitive advantage,” it seems they already have a candidate in mind.

“I think we got a plan in place, but I want to see them both play football still. This week we’ve got some work and then the following week we got some work, but I feel good with where we’re at.”
