Who is Daniel Palencia?

The right-hander Daniel Palencia’s contract was chosen by the Cubs.

23-year-old Palencia was formerly an Athletics prospect but was traded to the Cubs in exchange for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin in 2021. He had primarily served as a starter, but after being promoted to Triple-A, the team recently switched him to relief duty.

The extent of his ailment is unknown, but the upcoming All-Star break would allow him to miss just a few games if it’s not too serious. Boxberger has been on the disabled list since May 14 because of a strained right forearm. He won’t be allowed to return until 60 days have passed after that first IL placement, so he could theoretically do so after the All-Star break.
