Jacksonville Jaguars traded running back James Robinson to the New York Jets after Jets rookie Breece Hall suffered a torn ACL injury against the Denver Broncos in Week 7.

Who is James Robinson?

James Robinson is an American football running back for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). Born on August 9, 1998, he played college football at Ilinois State and was undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Robinson joined the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 27, 2020, as an undrafted free agent, not long after the 2020 NFL Draft had ended. Out of training camp, Robinson was included on the 53-man roster for the Jaguars’ regular season, and a few days later, the team named him their starting running back.

In the opening game of the 2020 campaign against the Indianapolis Colts, the rookie made his NFL debut. In the 27-20 triumph, he had 16 carries for 62 rushing yards and a reception for 28 receiving yards that required him to leap over Colts safety Khari Willis. Robinson broke the record for the most rushing yards by an undrafted rookie in Week 1 and became the fourth undrafted rookie running back to start the first game since 1970. Since Aveion Cason in 2006, he became the first running back from Illinois State to start a game. On September 20, 2020, a week later, in a 33-30 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Robinson recorded 120 all-purpose yards and registered his first career touchdown.

Following Dominic Rhodes, LeGarrette Blount, and Phillip Lindsay, Robinson is the fourth undrafted player in NFL history to carry for 1,000 yards in his first season. He also finished with the most scrimmage yards of any rookie free agent in NFL history. Robinson was also listed as the 100th best player in the NFL for 2021.

In the first quarter of Week 16 of the 2021 season, against the New York Jets, the 24-year-old tore his achilles tendon, ending his season. Through 14 games and 13 starts, he finished the season with 767 rushing yards and eight touchdowns.

The running back for Jaguars participated in team drills in 2022 NFL preseason, keeping him on track to return in Week 1 after sustaining the achilles injury. The team’s top back is expected to return by the season’s opening game against the Washington Commanders, according to coach Doug Pederson, but the team won’t worry if Robinson requires additional time.

He said,” It’s the expectation, it’s kind of the hope that he can be there at that point. If not, it’s OK. We’re comfortable with the guys behind him, and we’ll go with what he have.”
