As millions tune in to watch the coming season of Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, the pregame show will be making history with some special performances. The show will be featuring three deaf performers, Justina Miles, Colin Denny, and Troy Kotsur.

Deaf American sign language performer, Miles, will be singing Lift Every Voice and Sing alongside Emmy-award-winning actress Sheryl Lee Ralph. She will be performing at the Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime show helmed by Rihanna herself.

Who is Justina Miles?

Miles is a 20-year-old Philadelphia native. Presently, she is a nursing student at HBCU Bowie State University. Since an early age, she has been hard on hearing. Her mother is also a deaf person, while most of her family is mixed with hearing people. Miles is also a TikTok sensation who went viral for her #crushonyouchallenge TikTok video.

Moreover, Miles participated in the 2021-22 Deaflympics in Brazil as part of the USA team. The team even won a silver medal in the 4X100 women’s track relay event. Additionally, she also participated in 100 m and 200 m races during the same event. She was a valedictorian at the Model Secondary School for the Deaf in Washington D.C., according to the National Association of the Deaf.

Speaking on her performance at Super Bowl, she hopes it will inspire others to “not let any obstacles prevent you from achieving your dreams and to always be loved in yourself to go beyond”.

Miles will also be taking the center stage with some high-profile names to sing the National Anthem before the game. Along with Miles, CODA’s famed deaf actor, Troy Kotsur, will also be performing during the event.
