A collision on the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse claimed the life of 26-year-old Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder, his Bahrain Victorious team said on Friday.
The race’s organizers reported that about 200 kilometers into the competition, American racer Magnus Sheffield and Mäder crashed violently. On their way to La Punt, where the stage came to a close, they were descending the Albula Pass.

According to organisers, Mäder fell into a ravine and was discovered lifeless in the water. He was then revived and flown by an air ambulance to a hospital in the city of Chur.
“On Friday 16th June, following a very serious crash during stage 5 of the Tour de Suisse, Gino lost his battle to recover from the severe injuries he sustained,” Bahrain Victorious said in a statement.
“Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Who is Magnus Sheffield
American cyclist Magnus Sheffield is a member of the UCI World Team Ineos Grenadiers at the moment.
Prior to his 2022 season with Ineos, Magnus Sheffield left Rally Cycling in August 2021 for an unspecified reason.

One of the Flanders Classics races, the Brabantse Pijl, was won by Sheffield in April 2022. The first American to win this event and the first since Tyler Farrar over ten years ago to win any of these classics, he finished +0:37 ahead of French riders Warren Barguil and Benoît Cosnefroy.
Sheffield’s current condition
Sheffield has now been forced to drop out of the race, according to an official notice on the INEOS Grenadiers’ Twitter account.

The post states, “Unfortunately, Magnus Sheffield has been forced to withdraw from the Tour de Suisse2023 following a crash in the GC group in the final kilometers of stage 5. “
According to a statement from Tour de Suisse on the condition of the American, Magnus Sheffield was awake and speaking. He had a concussion and was taken to the Samedan hospital with bruises.
