With Manchester United having failed to secure any targets deemed a priority by new manager Erik ten Hag, the Dutchman is reportedly getting frustrated with the Red Devils’ ability (or current lack thereof) to attract top talent.

Notably, a large part of ten Hag’s frustration reportedly stems from United’s inability to strike a deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, whose attempted acquisition has come to a standstill over the 25-year-old’s high valuation.

It is understood that Barcelona hold de Jong to have a valuation of €80 million, a number, which, according to United, is a bit too much given the Blaugrana’s financial issues and the fact that no one else is vying for de Jong’s signature. Reportedly, United are willing to offer between €60-65 million for the Dutchman.

According to The Athletic, “Amid the impasse, murmurings have begun that Erik ten Hag is starting to get a little frustrated. He is said to understand United’s budgetary constraints — around £120 million — and knows that he would be able to afford certain additional signings if Barcelona can be convinced to accept the lower offer.”

However, the publication also notes that ten Hag is aware that “there is value too in getting a player through the door early so he and team-mates can mentally prepare.”

Indeed, much of the hype around ten Hag’s arrival has been fuelled by an anticipated change in United’s playstyle, which would see the Red Devils become a more possession-based and pro-active team on the ball.

For that, however, ten Hag requires players of a certain calibre, boasting both ball retention and distribution capabilities, a reality he knows he has to try and tackle in the summer transfer window.
